Intelligent Radio and Integrated Systems Laboratory HKUST

Our Mission

The Intelligent Radio and Integrated Systems (IRIS) Laboratory within the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering is dedicated to advancing next-generation high-frequency RF circuits and systems for terrestrial and non-terrestrial communications.

IRIS works to bridge the gap between theoretical innovation and real-world deployment — making future communication systems more efficient, reliable, and scalable.

Our Approach

IRIS adopts a multidisciplinary, system-level approach spanning RF circuit design, antenna engineering, signal processing, and test and measurement science to advance radiofrequency communication science and technology. Research in these areas is carried out with the broader system in mind, ensuring that advances at the component or algorithm level translate meaningfully to overall system performance.

Under the leadership of Prof. Ahmed Ben Ayed, research at IRIS combines theoretical analysis, hardware development, and experimental validation using state-of-the-art design tools and measurement equipment to deliver prototypes, scholarly publications, and enabling technologies.

Training the Next Generation

IRIS is committed to educating the next generation of researchers and engineers for leadership in academia and industry.

At IRIS, team members engage in the full research cycle, from theory and design to prototyping and experimental validation. This experience equips graduates with deep technical expertise, strong experimental capability, and a system-level understanding of advanced communication systems.
